Situated on beautiful Estero Bay, the cliffs and ridges of the island of Mound Key Archaeological State Park rise over 30 feet tall above the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Traces of life dating back millions of years have been recovered from this site, ranging from early crustacean life to the apparent beginnings of early human life. According to archaeological evidence analysis, the island was once a religious center for American Indians before the arrival of Columbus.
